Warm Weather Training in Portugal

Monday, April 7th, 2008

This is a bit of an overdue post considering that we haven’t added much to the site in the last month. Apologies. March was a case of keeping the head down and putting the training in. In my case I also had to take care of my work before I could head off warm weather training in April.

I arrived in Portugal last Wednesday to train with Gordon in Monte Gordo. Gordon had come over a week before me so he had the place sussed out for me which was very handy. As a place to train, it really is fantastic here. The weather is sooo much better than home, the facilities are top class and the buzz of being around other athletes never wears off. As resort towns go MonteG (as we like to call it) is very quiet but it suits the people that come here, namely athletes and old people. At the moment there is about 10 other Irish athletes so it’s great to have people to hang out with when we’re not training.

Anyways if we don’t give in to a case of Cabin Fever, we’ll add a few photos and maybe a video of our training over here (Gordon loves a good montage).

Cheers
Brian

David McCarthy’s Cold Weather Training in Limerick

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

Hi all,

David McCarthy here. As the only 800m runner in the group I clearly have to do the hardest sessions-which I’m sure the other lads will agree with!! Joking aside, I’m still in pretty heavy training doing sessions like 3 or 4 x 1000m (my personal favourite!!). Training has been going really well the last couple of weeks-my speed is good and I’m getting close to where I want to be in terms of specific 800m stuff. We had a time trial last week and I equalled my PB for 600m, which is encouraging given that it’s February and it was about 2ºC! (Not quite getting the same weather here as McKee is enjoying in South Africa!!) The 1000m runs still need to improve a bit but there’s plenty of time for that and they are going in the right direction. (more…)

My Valentine

Friday, February 15th, 2008

As an Athlete, Valentines day and Christmas day are all the same really. We still have to go training.

I found my self in a quandary yesterday - The sun wass shining but after the sun set it dropped to freezing temperatures. Why can’t the sun shine at night?

I pack my kit which at this time of year involves three layers on my chest and two pairs of leggings. Once you get moving its fine but it is a struggle to get up to speed sometimes. No worries its good to be alive and lets” Get it done!!” (more…)
